Invenergy

PROJECT DETAILS

Invenergy’s new 216,000 SF global headquarters represents the transformation of an existing workplace into a modern, sustainable, and deeply human environment. The project was both a renovation in place and a strategic expansion within 1 South Wacker, consolidating all of Invenergy’s Chicago offices into a single, cohesive tower presence. This ambitious move reflects the company’s rapid growth—both locally and in hubs like Denver—while reaffirming Chicago as its global anchor. The design challenge was clear: how do we create a workplace that is light, bright, motivating, and desirable for employees—supporting the realities of hybrid work? The answer emerged through a design that emphasizes natural light, comfort, and connection. Low ceiling heights drove the solution toward maximizing brightness and openness, with lighting strategies and materials that create an atmosphere both uplifting and serene.

At the center is a multi-floor atrium and stair, located on the 15th through 17th floors, which serves as the heart of the headquarters. The 15th floor—home to the elevator lobby, reception, and a dramatic arrival sequence—anchors the experience with a soaring atrium and bold architectural gestures. Flexible conferencing suites line the east façade, intentionally positioned where views are blocked by an adjacent building, ensuring the most active and collaborative functions take advantage of daylight and connection elsewhere.

The workplace strategy reflects Invenergy’s evolving business model. Rather than leaning heavily on open collaboration zones, the headquarters prioritizes conferencing and focused team interaction, providing a robust infrastructure to support hybrid meetings and global coordination. Dedicated pantries on multiple floors—including a vibrant gathering space on the 15th—create moments of connection throughout the day, while the ICC hub on the second floor, delivered by Arco Murray, centralizes technology integration and operational oversight.

Throughout, the design achieves a refresh of the Invenergy brand—clean, subtle, organic, and modern. Storytelling elements weave the company’s legacy directly into the environment: a reception desk and feature wall made from recycled wind turbine blades, Invenergy’s first solar panel, and a custom-painted turbine blade highlight its history of innovation. A modular “project wall” evolves alongside Invenergy’s portfolio, celebrating its expanding impact in sustainable energy.

Biophilic strategies reinforce the brand’s alignment with nature. Two terraces showcase native Chicago plantings, while greenery lines windows and staircases, softening transitions between indoors and out. The result is a workplace that feels alive—balancing warmth and innovation while embodying Invenergy’s role as a global leader in alternative energy.

This headquarters is more than an office: it is a living narrative of transformation and growth. By expanding and modernizing its Chicago home base, Invenergy has created an environment that supports its people, reflects its mission, and establishes a resilient, future-ready workplace at the forefront of sustainable design.
